FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the eligibility requirements for a child to join Paatasala?

A child should be at least 7 years old and able to understand Telugu.

Where are classes held?

Classes are held at teachers' and volunteers' homes across multiple locations in Charlotte on weekends. We also offer some online classes.

When do classes start, and what is the yearly class cycle?

Classes start in September and run through April. The entrance and assessment tests are conducted in August before the start of the class cycle.

How much does enrollment cost?

Paatasala is a 100% volunteer-run non-profit organization. The enrollment fee is nominal and helps support our program while encouraging and celebrating students' learning and progress.

My child can already read and write Telugu. Can he/she skip the beginner level?

Yes. We will conduct an assessment test to determine the appropriate class level for your child.

What curriculum do you follow?

We follow a curriculum designed for students living in non-Telugu-speaking countries. We use simple words, familiar examples, and everyday situations that students can easily understand and relate to. This helps them learn Telugu in a comfortable and effective way.

Are books or materials provided?

Paatasala provides materials based on the student's level in a PDF format. Parents are asked to print worksheets and put them in the binders.

Do students need to do any homework?

Yes. Students are expected to spend about 20 minutes per day, 5 days a week, practicing Telugu at home. They will have reading, speaking, and writing practice. Attendance and homework completion are also part of the evaluation and carry marks.

How are absences handled if my child misses a class?

Regular attendance is encouraged to support student progress. Parents should inform the teacher and request an excused absence if a student cannot attend class. Students should complete missed homework and review lessons to stay on track. Unexcused absences may affect continuation in Paatasala.

What is the parents' responsibility in Telugu learning?

Paatasala provides guidance for Telugu teaching, and teachers conduct classes for one hour per week. It is the responsibility of parents to help students practice Telugu at home on a daily basis.

Do we need to speak Telugu at home?

Yes. Speaking Telugu at home is important. Without regular practice at home, students may not be able to improve their Telugu speaking skills. Daily conversations in Telugu help them learn better.

Do parents need to do any volunteering?

Yes. Paatasala is run entirely by parent volunteers. All parents are expected to volunteer at least 8 hours per year.

Do teachers need any skills or education to teach Telugu?

Not necessary. Teacher training and lesson plans will be provided. Anyone can teach if they enjoy teaching and spending time with children. The only requirements are punctuality and commitment.

How can I start a class in my area?

If you would like to start a Paatasala class in your area, we will provide complete support, including lesson plans, exam papers, and all necessary materials. Teachers only need to dedicate one hour per week. Please email us at admin@paatasalausa.org to get started.
